Are There Secret Messages In The Bible?

In 1997, Michael Drosnin's book, The Bible Code, claimed that the Hebrew Bible contains a complex code that had predicted events which occurred thousands of years after the ancient texts were first written Drosnin's book was based on the work of Dr

Eliyahu Rips, an Israeli mathematician, who discovered the codes along with Doron Witzman and Yoav Rosenberg The mathematicians first arranged the 304,805 Hebrew letters of the Bible into a large array, removing all spaces and punctuation and running the words together one after another Then a computer searched for matches in all directions for names, words, and hidden phrases The Bible Code is said to predict events such as WW2, the holocaust and Hiroshima as well as the Moon landing, Winston Churchill and the death of Princess Diana So can a book written 3000 years ago predict major world events? According to Rips, only the Hebrew Bible may be used, because God gave the Hebrew characters to Moses one at a time, with no spaces or punctuation

Rips, Witzman and Rosenberg published a peer reviewed paper in the Statistical Science Journal in 1994 of their findings when they applied the code to the book of Genesis Since then, research has indicated that the hidden code exists throughout all the books of the Tanakh in the original Hebrew Rips and his associates tested the book of Genesis to see if the code could pick out the names of the 66 Rabbis who had the longest entries in various Jewish annals The Bible code revealed all 66 names, together with either the Rabbis' birth date or death date In test after test, the Bible code found people, places, and inventions that did not come into being until 3,000 years after the ancient Hebrew texts had been recorded

This is done by using a system called Equidistant Letter Sequence In which you skip the same amount of letters from a starting point, eg every 5 letters Drosnin, an agnostic, states that his belief in the Bible code was confirmed when Israeli Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin was assassinated in 1995

Stating that he had seen the forecast in the code a year earlier and even warned Rabin of the danger While Drosnin is unwilling to state that God is the author of the Bible code, others have firmly stated their belief that God guided the ancient scribes and directed them to place the prophecies within the texts To test the claims of the Bible code, skeptical mathematicians have downloaded the texts of different books to show that ELS can be used on any book large enough in order to find significant words They claim that hidden messages and prophetic statements made about famous politicians, inventors, military men and musicians can be found in most texts The best example is the use of Moby Dick by Brendan McKay

The Australian mathematician took up the challenge of finding another high profile assassination in the book, after Drosnin made the claim it couldn’t be done But McKay found more than one He found statistical evidence showing the assassination of Indira Gandhi of India, Marxist Leon Trotsky, Abraham Lincoln, Martin Luther King, and John F Kennedy It is also stated that the ELS system that is used to find the messages can be ‘tuned’, and that although the chance of finding a meaningful world at random is small, there are so many potential starting places and skipped words that some words are expected to appear Another issue with the theory behind The Bible code is raised by Mike Heiser PHD, who states that it is extremely unlikely that all of the letters are still in their exact order

Because of historical transmission of the Hebrew text, scribal mistakes in manuscripts and manuscript disagreements between scribes themselves, letters may have been lost and therefore the alleged code affected It is thought there has been a minimum of 77 letters lost from the text sequence upon which the Bible code is based Despite its criticisms, the Bible Code does have many supporters Although the code has been used to show major events that have taken place, there are those that believe the role of the code isn’t to predict the future or avert major catastrophes, but to prove there is a higher power Witzum, one of the original authors of the first paper on the Bible code, states the only people that could have potentially predicated the future from the code was the original authors

We are now only able to see the code as we know what to look for His example is the holocaust and Auschwitz He is only able to input that key word into the computer search program because of historical events, and when he did most of the German Death camps were found within the same ELS coding pattern This led to Harold Gans, a retired senior mathematician for the US

Department of Defense, to conclude after studying the Bible Code that: “The information was deliberately placed in the Bible by its author… Logic would dictate that the author could not be human, not be bound by limits of time It would be natural to conclude that the author is a divine being” The debate into the existence of the Bible code still continues, but if it is true, does it prove the existence of a higher intelligence or even God?
