The Mysterious Death of Seth Rich

On 10th July 2016, in the middle of a bitter presidential election in the United States, a young Democratic Party staffer called Seth Rich was gunned down in Washington DC

At first it appeared to be a mugging gone wrong Seth Rich was just another victim of gun crime in the nation’s capital However, conspiracy theorists suspect something much more sinister happened Was the budding politician the victim of a larger political game? Seth Rich was born on the 3rd of January 1989, and always had an interest in politics He volunteered for political campaigning with the Nebraska Democratic Party, and attended Creighton University to study political science

After graduating, he secured a job at the polling and strategy firm Greenberg Quinlan Rosner By 2016, 27-year-old Seth Rich was working for the Democratic Party on voter expansion Rich was last seen alive at Lou’s City Bar in Columbia Heights on 10th July, 2016 He spent the night drinking, and when the bar closed at 1:45 am, Rich declined an offer of a lift home from the bar manager Rich lived merely a mile from the bar, in the Bloomingdale neighbourhood, approximately thirty minutes’ walk away

Police still do not know what happened when Rich left the bar What they do know is that by 4am, he had still not returned home According to the manager of Lou’s City Bar, Rich considered visiting another bar called Wonderland Ballroom, which is an eight minute walk away Rich called his girlfriend twice The first call occurred between 2:05 and 3:34am, and the second from 3:36 to 4:19am

According to Seth’s father, Joel Rich, at 4:19am Rich told his girlfriend he was nearly home and said, “I gotta go” Then, at approximately 4:20am, an automatic gunfire sensor at Flagler Place and West Street went off When police arrived on the scene, they found Rich with two gunshot wounds in his back There were signs of a struggle His hands, knees and face were all bruised, consistent with a mugging, but curiously, his wallet, watch and phone were left behind

Rich died later in hospital Despite this, police believe the murder was a robbery gone wrong According to local news station Fox5, police said it was part of crimewave in the Bloomingdale neighbourhood Shortly after Rich’s murder, police arrested seven suspects involved in a spate of muggings around the Bloomingdale area The arrests recovered three guns

Ballistics tests failed to match any of them to the bullets that killed Seth Rich Rich’s family says a surveillance video offers a glimpse of the possible killers’ legs Yet no arrests have been made, and the identity of the murderer remains a mystery The mystery of a political staffer murdered in Washington attracts conspiracy theorists, including news anchor Sean Hannity and political consultant Roger Stone On 13th July 2016, conspiracy theorist Sorcha Faal claimed that Seth Rich was preparing to testify against Hillary Clinton, and was shot by a Clinton hit squad posing as the FBI

But why would an ardent Democrat like Rich testify against his own people? On 22nd July, nearly two weeks after Rich’s death, Wikileaks released a tranche of e-mails from the Democratic National Committee The e-mails revealed, among other things, a concerted campaign by the DNC to prevent Senator Bernie Sanders from securing the Democratic nomination According to emails from DNC Chairwoman Debbie Wasserman-Schultz, Sanders didn’t understand the party, and Wasserman-Shultz routinely criticised him for being critical of the DNC The leaks damaged the Democrats and Hillary Clinton Wasserman-Schultz was forced to step down after an intervention by Barack Obama, and the DNC lost the support of many Bernie Sanders followers

According to conspiracy theorist Jerome Corsi, Seth Rich was one of them On 9th August 2016, Wikileaks offered a $20,000 reward for information that would lead to a conviction in the case of Seth Rich Conspiracy theorists like Mike Cernovich believe this reward proves Rich leaked DNC emails to Wikileaks Specifically, Sorcha Faal alleges that Rich uncovered corruption at the heart of the Clinton campaign Faal claims the Russian Foreign Intelligence Service learned Rich had uncovered corruption, and that director Mikhail Fradkov told the U

S State Department, fearing that something might happen to Seth Rich The State Department expelled Fradov on the 7th July, and, according to Faal, told him the matter would be “taken care of” Seth Rich was murdered three days later Since 2017, a supposed White House leaker has left coded messages on social media website 4Chan, under the codename Q

Q’s messages allude to a paedophile ring being operated by the Democrats out of Washington According to Q and their followers, this ring has been protected by prominent Democrats like President Barack Obama and the Clintons However, Hillary Clinton lost the 2016 election, in part due to the leaked DNC emails Mike Cernovich believes the DNC may have murdered Rich in revenge for damaging Clinton’s election chances One QAnon post in particular, from 16th February 2018, included the abbreviations, “DNC -> (SR 187) (MS-13) -> DWS”

Followers believe the message means that DNC Chairwoman Debbie Wasserman-Schultz herself hired members of the international criminal gang MS-13 to assassinate Rich However, on 4th March 2019, Jerome Corsi apologised for a story he wrote for InfoWars that propagated the Seth Rich conspiracy According to Corsi, “[The article was] not based upon any independent factual knowledge"" Someone murdered Seth Rich during one of the most divisive national election campaigns in modern history The crime was destined to become politically charged

The fact that no-one has been brought to justice for his death has only fuelled the rumour mill However, in the midst of the conspiracies and media coverage, the Rich family grieves Seth Rich wasn’t just a DNC staffer He was also a big fan of American Football, of Settlers of Catan and of socialising with friends Until more evidence is uncovered, the circumstances of Seth Rich’s death will forever define his life
